How Cosmetic Tattoo Consultations Work
A cosmetic tattoo consultation is not a formality — it is an essential step that determines whether you are a suitable candidate and what technique will serve your features best.

A cosmetic tattoo consultation is not a box-ticking exercise. It is an in-depth conversation and assessment that determines whether the procedure is appropriate for you, which technique is best suited to your skin and features, and what a realistic outcome looks like for your specific situation. Skipping or rushing the consultation is the most common reason clients end up with unsatisfactory cosmetic tattoo results.
Why the consultation matters
Not every person is an ideal candidate for every cosmetic tattoo technique. Skin type, oiliness, existing brow or lip pigmentation, previous tattoo work, medical history, and lifestyle all influence which technique is likely to produce the best healed result. The consultation is where these factors are properly assessed — and where an honest, technique-specific recommendation is made rather than a blanket "this will work for you" assurance.
What to expect during a consultation
- A review of your medical history, skin conditions, current medications, and contraindications
- A visual assessment of your brow or lip shape, symmetry, and natural pigmentation
- Discussion of your desired outcome and the most realistic achievable result for your features
- An explanation of the recommended technique and why it suits your skin type and goals
- A patch test arrangement — mandatory for all first-time clients to confirm pigment tolerance
- A clear explanation of the healing process, aftercare requirements, and colour refresh appointment
- Honest discussion of any correction work required if previous cosmetic tattoo work is present

The patch test requirement
A patch test is a non-negotiable safety step for all first-time cosmetic tattoo clients. A small amount of the intended pigment formula is applied to a discreet area of skin to confirm there is no allergic reaction. The patch test is arranged at the consultation and must be performed at least 48 hours before any procedure. This step protects both the client and the practitioner and is standard practice at Royal Cosmetic Clinic without exception.
After the consultation
After the consultation, clients are given time to consider the recommendation and ask any remaining questions before booking the procedure. There is no pressure to book immediately. The goal is that by the time the procedure appointment is made, the client fully understands the technique, the healing process, and what the healed result will look like — removing the anxiety that comes from surprises.
Questions answered
Common questions.
Consultation pricing varies and will be confirmed when you contact the clinic to book. Some clinicians include the consultation within the total treatment cost; others charge a separate consultation fee that is deducted from treatment cost if you proceed.
Come with a list of current medications and any known allergies, and if possible, reference images of brow shapes or lip tones you find appealing. Arrive without brow makeup where possible so the clinician can properly assess your natural brow structure and hair pattern.
Yes. It is possible to discuss multiple cosmetic tattoo services in a single consultation — for example, both nano brows and lip blush. Each would require a separate patch test, and the procedure appointments would typically be at separate sessions.
